S D Burman or Sachin Dev Burman is a legend that the entire film and Music fraternity of India salutes and respects unconditionally. S D Burman fondly known as “Korta” in the Bengali film industry and “Dada” in the Hindi film industry single-handedly changed the way music was perceived and composed for films in India.

Born in Comilla under the British Raj S D Burman hailed from the royal family of Tripura. Sachin Dev Burman had a huge influence of Indian classical music as well as the folklore of Bengal and in general India. Because of his growing years in Comilla which is now a part of Bangladesh, he explored the rich folklore of Bengal and was familiar with all folk forms and music from that area. He started his career as a radio singer in Calcutta His first record was released in 1932 under the label “Hindustan Musical Products” with a classical song on one side and a folk song on the other side of the 78 RPM record. S D Burman created many hit solo albums in Bengali in the thirties and early forties until he moved to Bombay as a music composer. In 1944, Burman moved to Mumbai, at the request of Sasadhar Mukherjee of Filmistan, who asked him to give score for two Ashok Kumar starrers, Shikari (1946) and Aath Din, but his first major breakthrough came the following year with the company’s Do Bhai (1947). The song Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya sung by Geeta Dutt was his breakthrough song into the film industry. In 1949, came Shabnam, his biggest hit yet with Filmistan, especially noticeable for its multi-lingual hit song Yeh Duniya Roop ki Chor, by Shamshad Begum, which became a rage in those days. And thus begun the golden year’s of S D Burman Hindi Songs. Early on in his career, Burman refused to allow his voice be lip-synced on film by actors, as a result, even later on, in Hindi cinema, his thin yet powerful voice was often used as bardic commentary to haunting results, as in Ore Majhi Mere Sajan Hai Us Paar Bandini (1963), Wahaan Kaun hai Tera from “Guide” (1965) and finally Safal Hogi Teri Aradhana from Aradhana (1969), for which he received the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the year, 1970 .The S D Burman Old Songs are still a rage amongst many people.
