The agitator in your Maytag Dependable Care washer uses a back-and-forth motion to move your clothes from the top of the washtub to the bottom and back to the top again. The fins on the side of the agitator help facilitate this movement. When one of the fins sustains damage or the agitator fails to move, you must remove the agitator to make the necessary repairs.

The clutch assembly on your Maytag washer installs between the washtub and the transmission. The clutch assembly helps move your washer from agitate to spin during the wash cycle. When you begin to notice your clothes retaining more water than normal at the end of your wash cycle or notice that the washtub no longer agitates or spins, it may be time to change the clutch assembly. Installing a new clutch assembly requires removing the washer’s pump and transmission.

1

Unplug your Maytag washer from the electrical outlet. Turn off the water supply lines. Disconnect the supply lines from the rear of the machine and lower them into a bucket to catch water remaining in the hose.

2

Loosen the hose clamp holding the drain hose to the back of the washer. Depending on the clamp, either squeeze the ends of the clamp with pliers or loosen the clamp screw. Pull the hose from the washer.

3

Remove the top of the agitator by grasping the bottom of the agitator cap or fabric softener dispenser with your fingers. Pull up on the cap or dispenser to expose the 7/16-inch agitator bolt. If your machine has a dust cap between the bolt and the top of the agitator, grab the top of the cap and pull it from inside the agitator.

4

Attach a 7/16-inch socket to a socket extension and socket wrench. Remove the bolt at the bottom of the agitator. Grab the bottom of your agitator and pull it from the washtub.

5

Move the washer to a large work area. Spread an old blanket or piece of scrap carpet behind the machine. Lower the back of the washer to the floor to expose the washer’s pump, motor and transmission.

6

Find the two tension clips holding the pump to the motor. Use a flathead screwdriver to pop the tension clips from the pump and wiggle it off the motor. Hook the motor over one of the washer frame supports to keep the pump away from the work area.

7

Unplug the wiring harness from the motor. Pull the harness wires from the plastic support clips on the transmission. Hook the harness over another frame support to keep it from the work area.

8

Look for the three 1/2-inch bolts on the transmission beneath the motor. Use a 1/2-inch socket and the socket wrench to remove the bolts. Grab the motor and transmission. Pull the entire assembly straight out of the bottom of the Maytag washer. This exposes the agitator shaft and the half of the clutch assembly attached to the transmission. It also exposes the parts of the clutch assembly attached to the washer beneath the washtub.

9

Remove the clutch assembly thrust washer surrounding the agitator shaft by sliding it off the shaft with your fingers. Use needle-nose pliers to grab the U-shaped support ring that sat beneath the thrust washer. Pull the support ring off the shaft to expose the clutch retainer ring.

10

Note the installation position of the retainer ring. Use the flathead screwdriver to pry the ring from the agitator shaft and clutch assembly. This releases the assembly and allows you to slide it off the agitator shaft.

11

Remove the nylon brake cam from the support bracket at the bottom of the Maytag washtub. Slide the flathead screwdriver between the C clip and the metal shaft in the center of the cam. Use the screwdriver to slide the C clip from the shaft and release the cam.

12

Pull the old cam from the bottom of the washer and replace it with the new cam provided with a clutch assembly kit. Secure the new nylon cam with the new C clip.

13

Position the new clutch assembly on your work surface so the small spring inside the assembly faces down. Find the notched nylon ring provided with the kit and snap it in the center of the new clutch assembly.

14

Turn the assembly over, so the spring faces up, and slide it down the agitator shaft. Secure the assembly with the new retainer ring. Reuse the original U-shaped support ring, snapping it around the agitator shaft above the retainer ring. Replace the original thrust washer against the support ring.

15

Slide the agitator shaft through the center opening in the nylon cam. Adjust motor and transmission until the new clutch assembly sits flush against the new cam.

16

Reconnect the transmission to the washer with the three bolts you previously removed. Reconnect the motor and pump. Reverse the remainder of your disassembly steps to reassemble the washer and connect it back to the plumbing and electricity.
